Sociological research will focus on how these integrated technologies like SSCD systems impact urban-farm relations, barriers to grower adoption, and how these factors can inform better extension and educational programmatic efforts.

Year 1 activities:
A baseline of current practices must be established for 1) urban-farm relations and 2) current commercial orchard management practices of cherry and apples in MI, NY, and WA.  To accomplish this we will conduct:

  • a survey for apple growers in MI and WA (Year 2: survey apple growers in NY and cherry growers in MI and WA)
  • individual interviews to address urban-rural issues
  • focus groups with producers to identify barriers to adoption of a SSCD system
